I had my race this past weekend. Ugh. You know, I have been running for about 5 years now. Ever since Eleanor was almost 2 is when I started. Each of my races have gotten better and better, even if I did them post partum or pregnant. Well, I had a pretty good race in June with Deadwood Michelson, so I figured this race would be cake. I had been feeling great, no injuries, and I had been training pretty good.
Well, race morning came and I felt ok, but my tummy was a bit nervous. As soon as we got up there, I had to use the bathroom several times and I had the chills and felt a bit feverish, but I just assumed it was nerves. As the race started, I was feeling ok, but my body seemed rough. I figured I just needed to get warm. It was cold, and rainy, and windy. But each step I took, my body started hurting more and more. I was still making pretty good time, but I started feeling sicker and sicker. I remember one point where we had to cross under a dark tunnel and I was so dizzy from vertigo I had to stop and walk through it and hold onto the wall. By mile 6, I was feeling really sick, but I was about halfway, and I was still making good time (roughly a 9:30 mile). But come mile 8 it all stopped. My body felt like I had to flu. I could barely move my legs and I was so dizzy, I finally stopped and threw up. That didn't make me feel any better, so at the next aid station, I had to tell myself to keep going, even though I really just wanted to quit. But I grabbed some pretzels and some Gatorade and just decided at that point I had to walk the rest of the way. It was very hard to accept the reality of walking, but I just told myself to try an enjoy the scenery the rest of the way. And I did. But as I got to the finish line, I started bawling like a baby because I was so tired and ready to be done. 2:20 was my time. Worst time of all 6 of my halfs. So, now I got a bad race out of the way, hopefully good ones are to follow. As you can tell my the pictures, the girls had a blast waiting for me at the finish line in downtown Hill City.
